Seam’s Forte a Huge Success

by trish on October 30, 2009

We want to congratulate  Seam Collective with the huge success of their Forte Fashion Show. The event took place Oct. 21st at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC. The Fashion show featured the work of 4 emerging designers, Kenley Collins from Project Runway, Sheila Frank, Elizabeth Rynish, Marissa Erskine. The win, win of the night was half of the ticket price being donated to Gilda’s Club NYC, an organization for people living with cancer. We couldn’t be in attendence the night of the show but all the pictures and articles we have read make us pine for cloning. We may not be able to be everywhere at all times but we can shout out and say Rock On!

Welcome to # 20 – The Good News

by Mo on October 9, 2008

What’s Going On?

Back to school. Nose to the grindstone. Fall is here and in New England, the home of the Darlings, it is starting to cool off. Finally time to spend some time organizing inside, kiss your flip-flops goodbye for the winter, and pay some attention to your favorite layers and boots that have been hidden away…or hop online and buy anew! Consider Smashing Darling as your connection to boutiques across the country. Maybe a shopping trip to NYC, San Fran, and Chicago just isn’t in the cards for this Fall, but you can find designers from there right here with us. Go explore, and if you don’t have time to, don’t miss the Interviews and Editor’s Picks in the Smashing blog!

What’s New
We want to send a big thank you to the crew over at SheFinds. Thanks to them one lucky gal just won a $500 shopping spree to spend here at Smashing Darling. I know we told you all about it, but did you get to check out all the great comments? Go check it out, and here are some of our favorites:
- Catalina K: “Thanks for letting us know that such a special website and store exist.”
- Tammy: “It took me an hour to decide! I love this site and will be back often!”
- Yulonda: “I would like to start by saying that I absolutely love your site and its versatility.”
Coming Soon
Maybe the Fashion Week buzz has died down, but we know the shows go on. Call up your best gals and come enjoy some runway fun this month:
- Next week My It Things narrows down the search for their It Designer, go vote here. The winning designer will be awarded $5,000 toward the production of their Spring 2009 line. If you are near NYC, grab some tickets and come watch the show with us!
- The following week we are happy to head to Jersey City in support of Seam Collective
and their next show, Fenomenon. Just $20 in advance for an extraordinary evening of fashion and music to benefit Women Rising, a non-profit organization that helps Hudson County women in need.

A couple of weeks ago Modarling and I had the great pleasure of going to the Bust 15 Year Anniversary Party. There we met with Elizabeth and later Kelly from Seam Collective. Elizabeth is one of the women who originally formed the group to help promote female indie fashion designers. The group formed in 2005 after the women had seen the instillation of the Gates in Central Park. Very inspired they set out to create something meaningful of their own. Since they began, they have featured multiple fashion shows showcasing and helping women fashion designers. This years show is called Fenomenon. A portion of our net proceeds will go to WomenRising Inc. of Jersey City.  WomenRising is a community-based organization that provides economic development, social services and advocacy for women and their families in Hudson County.

A foundation built in textiles, theatrical millinery, and fashion, Anne De Pasquale’s innovative, retro-glam designs are reminiscent of the past, but interpreted for the fashion forward woman of today. You can read more from her profile here.

SD: How did you get into Millinery?
Anne: I kind of fell into millinery. My mom and my grandfather indirectly influenced me. My grandfather ALWAYS wore a fedora. My mom wore hats when she was young and bought me my first cool hat at a RISD sale while in college, but I fell in love with millinery after I blocked my first felt hat…no turning back! The Mad Hatter bug took over and the rest is history

SD: Where did you study?
Anne: I graduated RISD with BFA in Textile design, and after working in fashion industry for a few years, I took a millinery class at Parsons. But guess you can say I learned the craft of millinery on the job while working for Arnold S. Levine Theatrical millinery. My first job was to wire over 100 hats for Disney’s Mulan parade…can you say callous!

SD: Where do you turn for inspiration for your designs?
Anne: Inspiration comes from everywhere: The Broadway shows I work on as well as people on the streets of NYC, movies, Rock N’ Roll…. My personal favorite is when I dream about the hats I want to make. My intuition and subconscious do a lot of work for me.

SD: What makes you remain independent, why not work for someone else?
Anne: Actually I still work freelance for Arnold Levine Millinery…I get inspired working with other talented designers; especially the amazing Broadway designers who visit us daily. These experiences free my mind to experiment with my own designs.

SD: What does your average day entail?
Anne: Average day:I check email in the morning,(go to freelance job when working on Broadway shows),shop for trims/materials, work on designs for next collection, contact retailers about orders, research/development, networking, exercise, make more hats…eat…problem solve…multi task…relax(sometimes with friends/boyfriend)…Repeat… Hope to add Aerial flying soon…

SD: Describe your personal style?
Anne: Retro glam with a hint of relaxed hippy casual ease

SD: Who are your fashion icons (past or present)? Do you think they influenced your personal style?
Anne: I tend to relate to the playfulness of Carrie from Sex and the City, but Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a long time personal favorite..classic but cutting edge sophistication. Audrey was always stylish, polished and finished her style with great and sometimes playful hats!

SD: Do you have any current fashion obsessions?
Anne: I love all accessories! I collect sunglasses but of course always love a new hat! At the moment I’m working on unique headbands and bags… and what woman doesn’t love shoes…my next venture is to learn how to MAKE shoes!

SD: Do you have any events that you are getting ready for in the near future?
Anne: I am working on a sample sale end of summer, a charity benefit for a member of the Milliners Guild of NYC to be announced; go to www.millinersguild.org for more details. As well as being part of the Design Collective event in October.
Date: Saturday, October 25th, 2008.
Time: 6:00 pm -1:00 am; Fashion Show starts at 8pm
Location: Canco Lofts, 50 Dey Street, Jersey City, NJ. www.cancolofts.com
