SF indie Fashion

This quote makes my heart sing, “Garment manufacturing is quietly thriving in San Francisco, thanks to a plethora of local designers producing handmade clothing here in small batches…”

It is so amazing to see clothing manufacturing on an upswing in the US, not because of big businesses, but because of  independent local designers with small businesses. Thank goodness for social media. If it weren’t for twitter I am not sure I would have seen this article,  How Clothes Are Made: An Inside Look At Garment Manufacturing in SOMA. SF Indie Fashion posted it in their tumblr blog. It’s worth the read.

by trish on August 25, 2010

We have to thank the girls at Made Jewelry, Abigail and Debbie, for starting their video series, Made in SF. Below is episode #3 we wanted to share with you. It is a short moment in time with founder, Lorraine Sanders, of SF Indie Fashion blog. She is a huge fan and supporter of local fashion which comes through loud and clear in her blog. The independent fashion industry has so much going on in SF, they are lucky to have someone like Lorraine shouting it out. Enjoy meeting her through the video, we did.

The Bold Italic has put together a week of events, The Haberdash, featuring menswear in SF. They have paired up with some of the best menswear establishments to shed a little light on the great menswear in the city. I have to admit it is kind of refreshing to read about a week dedicated to fashioning men. I think this is just the beginning. Mark my words, it is only a matter of time before every city is highlighting menswear events. We will be seeing more menswear designers popping up as the locally made fashion / independent fashion industry grows. I have so many men come into my store and just about beg me to do menswear. There are lots of men out their desperately trying to find something a bit more unique than what we have been seeing. So lucky you if you are a man and in SF this week. Tonight, Wed. 8/25/10 is The Haberdash Fashion Show. Tickets, $15, are available for purchase.

by trish on July 22, 2010

Market U

SF Indie has paired up with 6th Generation Media to present:

Market U: PR & Media Outreach 101 for Local Fashion Businesses

I am really sad I am not in San Francisco. This looks like an awesome seminar. Who doesn’t need help marketing their product? I am so busy designing and making my product, sometimes the my marketing falls through the cracks. Maybe someday they will be able to offer this online for the whole Smashing Darling community and indies everywhere to take advantage of, but for now it for the lucky SF independent fashion industry peeps that get to attend this one. I will admit, I am a little jealous.

The seminar is designed to help emerging and established independent designers, boutique owners, stylists, makeup artists and other small businesses in the local fashion industry hone their media outreach and public relations skills. The event is the ideal way to boost your small business marketing and PR initiatives while networking with other local businesses owners.

What: Market U
When: Aug. 3, 2010 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Pigment Cosmetics, One Market St., SF
Cost: $35 per person (advance registration required – no tickets will be available at the door). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network. Buy your tickets now.

Here is some of what will be covered:

During this one-night event, you’ll learn concrete, hands-on tactics and strategies that you can use to better promote your business on your own and gain increased media coverage in the future:

  • The do’s and don’ts of contacting journalists
  • Typical ways companies are featured in the media- Press release basics
  • The top public relations myths
  • Easy social media strategies for getting noticed
  • Key strategies for managing your own public relations efforts
  • Why your web site might be hampering your success
  • Much more!

They’ll go beyond the fluff and leave you with real ideas that you can act upon immediately, regardless of the size of your business or your marketing budget.

Twine Pendant Earrings

Today’s featured item, Twine Pendant Earrings, by Kyler Eco Designer Jewelry by Joy O. Two recycled steel intaglio pendants, inspired by a simple ball of twine, are coated in black zinc, hung from 14 karat gold fill earwires and are designed and made in San Francisco. Fibrous and organic, twine represents the ties in life that bind us together with ease and a sense of belonging; these strings that we choose to connect to each other. These pendants stand out beautifully combined with a heavy cable knit cardigan, or hanging above a simple V-neck tee. Pendant is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Earwires measure 3/4 inches in length.

We see a couple darling designers will be showing at The Bazaar Bizarre in SF, Sat. Nov. 21, 2009. Go check out fiftyseven-thirtythree and Go Robot in person. Tell them Trish and Mo say hi! Wish we could be there. We see lots of other great designers in the list as well! Looks like a great place to do a little shopping for the holidays. The bonus, all locally made products from good ol’ American designers.
