This one is for all of our shoe designer wannabes in or near Brooklyn … I know I fall in this category. I am sooooooooo a shoe making, leather-sewing, sole-forming wannabe. 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, NY is having a shoe making workshop. Listen up and act fast, registration ends July 1, 2010 for this month long, one evening a week class. Class will be Tuesdays – July 6, 13, 20, 27, 2010 from 7 – 10 in the evening.
Class Description:
In our first class you will measure your own feet in order to create a pair of sandals to fit them! You’ll build patterns based on your own design, then cut the leather, assemble your pieces and create a lining. Next, you’ll create a custom outsole shape, based on your feet, and an insole designed to meet your design and comfort whims. Finally, you’ll attach your upper to your sole, and be all set for spring with your new kicks!
Participants will be supplied with all the basic tools & materials needed to make their sandals. However, if there are any elements (buckles, ornaments, etc) that you would like to include, please bring them to the first class, so that we can help you incorporate them into your design.

Today’s interview was originally posted by Anna, self proclaimed shoeaholic. Everyday she shares her love and endless joy of shoes in her blog Shoe Smitten. In this particular post she shares a interview with an artist Mark Schwartz. He has been designing shoes in Italy for his entire career. He also turns shoes into art. Visit his website and blog. You will want to dig around a bit, he is giving away one of his works in a contest. Good Luck and may the best shoe lover win.

If you’re a shoe lover (and you should be if you’re reading this), then you’ll love Mark Schwartz’s work! Check out this short, candid interview I scored with him yesterday:
Q: How did Andy Warhol encourage you and influence your work?
A: I met Andy Warhol thru Roger Vivier, was working as Vivier’s assistant and one day Warhol arrives at the Vivier office! Well Warhol was a bit shy but he did sit me down many times over the next year and change, he made monthly visits to the Vivier office to promote Interview magazine, drop off a copy and chat a bit.
We began to talk about shoe design and i was doing these artistic doodles of shoes in different “poses” very fluid and such, Warhol was the one who pushed me to keep drawing the shoes this way , i told him i wanted to paint the shoe as an art form, so he was very positive and nice to me about what i wanted to do, really if it was not for him i would have never have kept doing what i am doing now.
Q: Do you have a favorite shoe fashion icon? Who?
A: My favorite shoe icon is Vivier of course, i was lucky and i mean lucky to be chose by him and work with him for so many years. I love what he created and what he will always influence in modern day shoe design he set the pace for Blahnik, Louboutin, and all who follow.
Q: What is your favorite thing about high heels? What gives them life?
A: High heels have there own personality! They speak without saying a thing. If you look at some of my paintings you can see the high heel in different moods ! High heels on a woman well ,again there is not just one word that describes that look but the life comes from both the shoe itself and the movement of the woman’s body, her personality her body language!

A Smashing Work Outfit, From The Editors Of SheFinds
We at SheFinds are always big fans of versatile, feminine pieces that we can wear for a full day without changing three times, and that match more than one ensemble – and that’s part of the reason we had such a good time browsing Smashing Darling and reading the responses from our contest a few weeks back.
For a day of meetings followed by dinner or cocktails, we are particularly fond of these five easy pieces.
The Giselle Dress from Punkin NYC is a fabulous day-to-night base piece, thanks to the hints of velvet at the neckline and on the belt, and the feminine, body-skimming silhouette.
Since we’re often carrying our laptops, or lots of papers, or a second pair of shoes, tattle’s tan leather bag would work well for every day: it’s big, a little slouchy, and has a flat strap – absolutely essential for staving off shoulder pains (for a little longer).
For a pop of color, we’d add Ricardo Tovar’s yellow satin flats – fancy enough to wear out after work, but easy to walk around in all day.
A slightly imperfect circle necklace and a rough-hewn ring add some uniqueness to the look, and ensure you won’t seem too buttoned-up come nighttime.
Check out our blog for more fashion picks from SheFinds!
