We at Smashing Darling are so happy more and more local independent designer shopping events are popping up all over. This one is for you Chicago!

Holiday Shop IN Chicago will be held on Tuesday, December 6th from 5-9pm at the legendary Drake Hotel.

Talented Chicago designers will come together for one evening to offer deals on clothing, jewelry, accessories and more.

Sharing Resources: Fashion Collectives and Incubators Inspire

Please take some time to watch this video and get to know a new fashion collective on the block. It gives us such joy to see fashion incubators and collectives popping up across the country. Why leave the community you love for New York or L.A., when all the resources you need are right at your fingertips? Detroit Fashion Collective and others (see below) hope you will stay put and create your fashion vision from your home locale. They also intend to help in a big way. These organizations are creating a new model, ultimately one that benefits both the designer where they are — be it Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Chicago — as well as the entire community around it. We are thankful to see this happening, the future is bright darlings, just make sure you are looking –and shopping– in the right places. Special exclusive preview of Vanessa Gade’s new jewelry line just for The Mission Statement. The Wright Collection pays homage to the architecture and design of Frank Lloyd Wright, most notably his series of stained glass windows. Vanessa attributes the elongated rectangle shapes to the influence of artist Piet Mondrian while the overall feel of the collection recalls the elegance and movement of the Art Deco era.

The collections at TRUNK feature unique women’s wear, jewelry, accessories, art and furniture, all locally designed and manufactured. The new store itself provides a backdrop for the products, making a bold statement that “style can be created and found locally.

What is your favorite detail of your designs?
As with many of my designs, while I am in the middle of creating a piece, I suddenly see a inspiring new shape emerge! I enjoy putting pieces together in unexpected ways, such as in the styles with interlocking circles. In fact the very foundation of my art: metal+crochet exemplifies my desire to create unexpected harmony. I also like starting with flat shapes and finishing with pieces sewn or hammered into 3-dimensions.(Full interview here…)
