Darling Fashion Around the City

Uptown. Downtown. Brooklyn. From luxury pieces to ethical bits – we have been popping around oohing over Darling (and others like Bodkin, image right) Spring Collections. The Green Shows were especially inspiring, featuring a selection of eco-conscious fashion designers including Darling Lara Miller. We cannot wait to see her beautiful Spring line up on Smashing Darling. Bob Bland rocked her show at her very own venue The Arsenal, check out this Village Voice slideshow – sweet! We were thrilled to watch Minna K present at Nolcha, as well as meet some wonderful accessory designers in the Accessory Lounge…more recaps in the blog, coming soon.

Brand Yourself Darlings!

This past Monday eve we got to see some of our favorite people-and meet some new faces- at the second IFB Dress Up Soiree, hosted by sweet Jennine from The Coveted. It was a packed house, and a great panel discussing the future of online fashion media. Stay tuned to the IFB blog and catch recaps.
We are so inspired by all the amazing bloggers out there able to use their voice to promote their own personal brand. Take some time to read this post by Crosby of PR Couture. Info about branding, how important good photos are, prioritizing as a small label and loads more. A must read.

Passion, Process: Blog Away

Darlings, are you out there blogging about your brand, your inspiration, and the passion that keeps you going through the wonderful insanity that is life as an independent designer? We hope so. If you have a blog and we don’t know about it, or a favorite indie designer’s blog that you read, please let us know so we can link to it from the Smashing Blog. We want people to know all that you do to keep your designs out there. Read this Grechen’s Closet post/comments about supporting independent designers and see all those out there supporting your world.

Sharing a Post from The Coveted

by trish on September 7, 2009

blackdress4

Sharing the ever so lovely Jennine, from The Coveted, wearing darling designer Mahtab Azimi.

Everyone needs a comfy little black dress in their wardrobe arsenal. This much I know… and I have quite a few in my closet too! Yet, like black shoes, there never seems to be enough.. like there never seems to be enough days when everything happens effortlessly. Well, for me anyway.

Thank you Jennine for including a link to Smashing Darling too!

I feel like I have failed the community! I found out about this awesome exhibit (that I won’t be able to see) a few weeks ago and forgot to post. This exhibit looks so amazing. A good one to see to get the creativity flowing. Ivana Ristic deconstructs men’s clothing and reconstructs it into ultra feminine, modern clothing, and is just truly inspiring. Please, please, please if you go to see it, or have been, I would love to hear more about and would love to see pictures. Any info would be great. Go, Go, Go … there is only today and tomorrow. Show ends Aug. 27th. I hope this blog post reaches at least one person that hasn’t seen it and now will go.

Jennine from The Coveted caught up with the artist/designer a few times. To read more about Ivana Ristic check out, Having Tea With Ivana Ristic and Ivana Ristic – Deconstructed Process

:: Design Guild SF ::
Show Dates: August 13-27

Regular Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 12 to 6pm

Around the site
Welcome new darlings! Welcome indeed to all the lovely new Spring creations your hard work has produced – kudos! Sales seem to be everywhere, if you are planning a pre-Mother’s Day sale on the site please give us a heads up and we’ll make sure to let the Darling shopping community know all about it!

Speaking of sales, do you have contacts for companies who would run sample/overstock/trunk sales for indie designers? If so, please share, and send them our way!

how to: Choose the right networks

We know lots of you darlings are out there blogging about your personal brand: your story, inspiration, designs, and events. If you aren’t yet – get to it! The designers who are out there talking about their work and promoting it seem to -no surprise- sell more! We also know you are busy. Finding a balance between creating, merchandising, and promoting is hard work, it’s nice to know there are supporters out there. Here is a great post from the lovely Jennine Tamm (of The Coveted, and founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers) with her Top 5 Traffic Yielding Social Networks. As always, we’d love to hear what you think.

Tips and tidbits

Advice from a Photographer: Images of your work are so important. If you are prepping for your first photo shoot experience be sure to read this Do’s/Don’ts list in the blog, just in case you missed it!

Inspiration from TrishDarling: There is no need for independent fashion without independent style. Everyone would be perfectly happy to look like their neighbor and that is a terrifying thought. Check out INDIE mag.

Happy Spring!

Putting a Face to a name

by trish on February 26, 2009

Putting a face to a name is smashing – an opportunity to chat, share stories, and find common ground. There was a celebratory vibe in the air last week at the Dress Up Soiree hosted by the ever-lovely Jennine Tamm of The Coveted. Jennine is also the beauty and brains behind the Independent Fashion Bloggers Network, for whom this event was being held. Thanks to Jennine for bringing us all together both online, and off.

All around the town – indie everywhere

by trish on February 17, 2009

We consider ourselves lucky to be attending so many fashion events happening all around New York during this fashion week. Last Thursday Modarling spent an inspired evening at Laura Dawson’s fashion show. Click here to watch the video of her fabulous show.

The next day we found ourselves at the Bryant Park Hotel penthouse for Expose and to see Karelle Levy (Krelwear) doing KREL 2 GO. She knits up beautiful knits in her Miami studio, packs them up and takes them on the road with her – then drapes right on customers while her assistant sews them on the spot. Waiting for Modarling’s piece to be done was the perfect time to check out the other designers taking part in the show.

We were also happy to make it to the Rebecca Turbow Safe show down on Bond Street. Her clothing is fresh and modern. Large fabric bauble necklaces, large collars and ruffle neck pieces stood out against the short silhouettes. Her collection breathing an air of understatement with an all gray and black color palette.

Next stop was the Dress Up event hosted by Jennine Tam, of The Coveted and The IFB Network (Independent Fashion Bloggers). It was so nice to meet and put faces to names with lots of the IFB members.

Next stop Digital Moda, an event to bring fashion designers, bloggers and people from the tech world all together in one place to help move fashion forward in the Web 2.0 world. Five darling designers and their models will be in attendance with us, and in our book – this is fabulous.

I am so excited and happy to have Jennine aka Lady Coveted, as our guest editor today. For those of you that do not know her or her blog go to The Coveted. Her blog is amazing and is built around her personal style. When I think of Jennine, Brave is a word that really comes to mind (stylish is just a given). She uses her blog as a way to connect and share all the beautiful things life has to offer. I stole most of that last line from her ‘about us‘. As her tagline states- be stylish • be lovely • be coveted- So without further adieu I give you editorial and picks from Lady Coveted.

One of my favorite pieces is this button up blouse with bold black and white stripes. It’s so simple yet, it’s such a strong, graphic statement. While the black and white combo is nothing new, it’s also timeless. I can always mix with other elements, patterns, checks, gingham, florals, polka-dots. I picked these three pieces because they really emulate how I’m feeling at the moment, feminine silhouettes, effortless Parisian trousers, ruffles and lace. – Jeninne

Clockwise from the top these are her picks from our smashing designers:
1. Bye Bye Birdie by Dahl by Project Runway’s Alison Kelly
2. Amsterdam in Navy Stripe by Misile
3. Ginsburg Trouser by Laura Dawson
