Venuszine 4rth Annual Craft Off

by trish on August 23, 2008

Enter Venus Zine’s 4th Annual Craft-Off Contest Sponsored by Singer Sewing Machines. The deadline is September 18. Here is your chance to get yourself published!

Got a clever handmade gift idea? Does it cost less than $40 to produce? Want to share your project with the world? If you answered yes to these questions, you should totally enter Venus Zine’s 4th Annual Craft-Off Contest, a competition pitting the craftiest in the land against one another to come up with the best, most creative, most fantabulous DIY creations imaginable … on a budget.

Winners will be chosen from the submissions received, and the best projects will be featured in the winter 2008–2009 issue of Venus Zine, on newsstands December 1. Winners will receive a four-issue subscription to Venus Zine — additional prizes to be announced (keep checking back!). Winners will be featured fancy pants–style in the magazine (photo and bio and all) in addition to venuszine.com.
RULES SHMULES
- Your project should be an innovative, unusual creation using materials whose total cost does not exceed $40. We’re looking for jewelry, clothing, home décor, furniture, bags, accessories, bath and body works, pet goodies, and whatever else you can think of. Try to come up with unexpected uses for objects, or put a new spin on an old favorite. Surprise us with your boundless creativity. The mission is to create gifts to give during the holiday season, but your project doesn’t need to be holiday-themed.
Your entry consists of two parts:
1. Digital photographs of your project: We will not actually run your photos, so don’t worry about doing a high-tech photo shoot. Instead, we will conduct our own photo shoot for the magazine.
2. A set of instructions for assembling it. How-tos should be concise but sufficiently detailed so that Venus Zine readers may replicate your work. Please include a materials list that gives the approximate cost of each material.
- Any Venus Zine reader is welcome to participate, whether you’re a DIY businessperson or just have a flair for the crafty. Unfortunately, if you’re related to a Venus Zine staffer, you cannot apply. (You know how it goes – we wouldn’t want it to look like we’re biased.)
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR BRILLIANT IDEA
- E-mail jpegs of your Craft-off Contest submission along with how-to instructions to craftoff@venuszine.com .
- All entries must be received by September 18, 2008, to be considered. We will notify you if you are a winner.
- You may submit up to five projects.
Ladies and gentlemen, fire up your glue guns, rev up your sewing machines, and show us what you’re made of!
PRIZES:
- GRAND PRIZE: 1 winner will get the Singer 8763 Curvy sewing machine.

- Runners-up will receive one-year subscriptions to Venus Zine.

- All winners will be featured in the winter issue of Venus Zine in addition to venuszine.com.

What’s Going On

Whirling dervishes, that is what we are! Things are busy in the Darling world. Last month JulieDarling -always keeping her hand on the tech pulse for our Darling world- was in San Fran attending the girls in tech conference. TrishDarling and MoDarling just had a blast at the BUST mag 15th anniversary party – and oh what a party it was! Congrats to the entire BUST staff for 15 years celebrating girl culture on the cutting edge. Then we were up and at ‘em early to check out the excellent 3rd Ward and meet Bob from Brooklyn Royalty; keep your fingers crossed for video footage of laughs and inspiration shared with her. She has amazing things in store for her upcoming fashion show in September, but we can’t tell!

What’s Going On

Craziness and joy abound in the Smashing Darling world – welcome all to version 2, we are reborn! This sweet indie gal to the right is a great image for how we feel, hands and arms raised up in a big cheer! Version 2 makes it so much easier to navigate the Darling world; to clearly see all the different categories of indie fashion that hang within our community. Product images are bigger, you can sort, filter, and scroll. We have hand picked some indie standouts for you in the Chic Boutique, created a collaborative home for indie fashion events nationwide (know a designer in your area having an event? add it in!), and created room on our homepage to keep you easily updated on our latest promotional fun (ie: this month Venuszine!).
Girls: Joy from shop.teddahughes

Women: Create your own, Kate Boggiano

What’s New

We love our new look! Please let us know what you think, and certainly if you have any problems – just let us know! Most issues thus far have been solved with a simple clearing of the cache. Computers have a way of remembering how things used to work. Here is how to clear the cache:
If using a PC, you can clear it out by going to Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files > Delete all offline content. If you are a MAC user, not to worry – you lucky ducks can check a box that says clear cache every time you shut down the computer.

Coming Soon

If you frequent the Darling blog you’ll notice our lovely new look there as well. Enjoy your Friday coffee, lunchtime, or those last few minutes before you run out the office door perusing the Friday Editors Picks. Sometimes it is the Darlings, sometimes a friendly editor we have smashed up with…you’ll just have to check in and see!

Keep your eye out on the weekend too for a bit of Scavenger Hunt fun. Spend some time exploring and I bet you can win…more info soon!

Boys: Round Botton Baby is super-fly!

Men: Dawson for men, the guys get their own

Smashing Kudos and tidbits

Goodness me, did you know we have over 400 designers?…the Darlings have a new column over at Cause a Scene international fashion mag…the Style Observer hearts indie…our new look gets profiled…and CraftStylish is already addicted!…Darling Evlove made it in to the final round at IdeaBlob, check it out, and we’ll keep you posted for the final round of voting!

What’s Going On

It is hot out, that’s what is going on. Summer has arrived fast and furious. We figure you don’t have all day to surf Smashing Darling to find goodies to stay cool in, and still look smashing…so we did it for you! Dresses and tanks will get you through, and here is a scattering some fresh attire from some new, some original, Darlings (much more here).

Don’t forget dad this weekend! Maybe he has a little fashion darling in him? Old school dad may be hard to buy for, maybe a indie tie will do. New dad, no problem; show him how cool you think he is with a funky t-shirt, wallet, or maybe some Manplastic!

What’s New

New friends! The Darling’s have smashed up with Venuszine this month: when you subscribe
to the magazine you are automatically entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate to
Smashing Darling. There will be 25 lucky winners for the gift certificates. What is Venuszine? If you don’t know, click quick! and check it out. Venuszine is the leading source for coverage of women in music, art, film, fashion, and DIY culture. Venuszine.com is the daily updated companion to the quarterly, internationally circulated magazine.

Coming Soon

Indie Style Scene will be a new segment for the blog, we want to know how you wear your indie. Here is your chance to show off your favorite indie fashion find. We want to know who you are and what you love, and want others to know too. This will be a weekly feature. We think the long arm of cool indie reaches far and wide and we want to highlight that. To get more details email trish@smashingdarling.com.
By the way, are you ready for Smashing Darling Version 2? We hope so, because it is right around the corner, and one day soon you are going to bump right into our new look.

Smashing Kudos and tidbits

Goodness, there is lots to share! Ready? Here we go: Indiestylefile lusts after Dahl dress….many thanks to Deb and Wendy, our DIYcity friends, for shouting out Darling love to the Stylehive….Coupon Cowgirl loves our one-of-a-kind (scroll to May 22)….PR Couture digs SCAD senior fashion show….our new friends at the Style Observer fall for Lara Miller, who wouldn’t?! Style.com gave DRES some perforation praise, his bags are seriously sexy.…and last but not least, an oldie but goodie, summer love for Krelwear on the Urban Outfitters blog!

Until next month, stay cool and stay smashing!

cheers! ~ the Darlings
