Marching Orders

The art of carving cameos was revived during the Renaissance, and was one of the most cherished pieces of jewelry during the Victorian era. These keepsakes were set in bracelets, brooches, rings, necklaces, and even tiaras. Cameos were often kept as heirlooms and passed down from generation to generation.
The elegant design, often a portrait head, is commonly cut in the light-colored vein, and the dark one is left as the background. Glass of two colors in layers may be cameo-cut. Beautiful gold and rose gold, sardonyx, and bezel were common features in cameos. Some more ornate pieces had small pearls or other gems or jewels in the framing of the cameo. Lava pins were cameos which often portrayed prominent people such as artists, political and philosophical figures, and Grecian characters.
After the Victorian era, a number of materials became available to mimic the earlier hand carved, finely detailed cameos. Sophisticated costume jewelry cameo styles are now made in many materials.
Our boutique has a number of vintage cameos from a range of eras as well as several modern cameo reproduction pieces. This particular item consists of a reproduction cameo-inspired pendant on a vintage chain.
The cameo-inspired pendant is accented by an antique gold frame. The pendant hangs from a vintage brass patina designer chain – not plated – out of the packaging for the first time. The twist chain has no jump rings between the links; instead each link is interconnected with the next, giving the chain a great look and great strength. The chain is approximately 2 mm wide and 18” long.
