Fabulous Fordite aka Dagenham Agate….
The “stone” in this piece is made from layers of automotive paint, upcycled (by a talented lapidary artist in the UK) through refining and polishing to expose the cross sections of layers…The stone comes from slag created by overspray during the painting process…The slag for this piece originated in the 1970’s, from the Dagenham Ford plant in the UK…Fordite is considered to be fairly rare as car bodies are no longer spray painted, so the source of the slag no longer exists. Please note that the name of this piece is borrowed from the names of two automotive paint colors from the 1970's.
Each piece of Fordite is one of a kind, which makes the finished piece of of a kind as well.
When your necklace arrives I do suggest examining the “stone” up close- the layers and colors are fascinating and while as a whole it is a beautiful piece, I am entranced by the intricacies of this material. For more info on Fordite, I do suggest a visit to http://www.fordite.com.
I set this piece in a handmade bezel of sterling silver, set atop a sterling disk, oxidized to give the stone a bit more “pop”…
The ¾” pendant dangles from an 18” length of sterling silver snake chain which closes with a sterling silver lobster clasp…
Wrapped in my signature fresh style…
