"strange fruit" is a poem written by abel meeropol that was made famous in song form by billie holiday. the poem is a condemnation of racist violence- specifically the lynching of african americans- and the chillingly dark lyrics are cradled gently, are even made beautiful, by holiday's wounded vocal. it is a song that never fails to move me.
