Designer Profile

About Me

Julie Lake is a metalsmith/designer currently living in a 1000sq.ft. live, work, and gallery space in Savannah, GA with her partner, small dog, and large cat. She studied studio art at the University of Oregon and at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland.

Much of her work is created by industrial processes (ie, welding and machining), but utilizes these tools to create small scale work. "I kept burning my hands, because I couldn't hold small pieces with bulky welding gloves. But, in an old musty box I found a pair of tight-fitting, white leather gloves that had been my grandmother's - which are perfect."  Often, her innovative techniques are discovered by using tools in ways they weren't originally intended.

In addition to jewelry, Julie has designed housewares, lighting, interior elements for restaurants, and original sculptural pieces.

Julie explains her design process in this way: "I have to avoid thinking too much, and I don't keep a sketchbook. I just start working and hope something beautiful happens, and then I hope I can do it agan."
