Sarah’s passion for metalwork began at the age of 16 when she began taking classes in jewelry design at her high school in Birmingham, Michigan. Right away, Sarah made a connection to the art form. Working with tools and metal was empowering and Sarah enjoyed the sense of strength and accomplishment metalsmithing gave her. At the same time, creating thoughtful, delicate pieces of jewelry spoke to Sarah’s genuine sensitivity. She considers jewelry miniature sculpture that is meant to commemorate a person, a feeling, or a special occasion. She is passionate about the creative process and enjoys infusing her work with deep, heartfelt emotions. Sarah has found that creating jewelry is the perfect way for her to express both strength and sensitivity.
Prior to launching Mushka Designs in 2004, Sarah attended the University of Michigan School of Art and Design where she studied Jewelry Design and Metalwork as well as Graphic Design. Sarah’s skills were further refined through years of apprenticing for a variety of designers in both Michigan and Los Angeles, CA. Sarah’s work experience and education in art has influenced her to create from a contemporary perspective while staying true to old-world metalsmithing techniques.
With nature as her muse, a repertoire of metalsmithing techniques, and a flair for the contemporary, Mushka is comprised of variety of compelling collections that include: Earth, Nightfall, Blossom, Organic Adornments, Leaf Link, Slate, and Love Tags. Ultimately, Mushka is a body of work that represents a fusion between functional jewelry and the art of metal sculpture. Each piece balances strenght and sensitivity and is a celebration of natural beauty.
